“Stevie Smith has been increasingly recognized as one of the most important female British poets of the twentieth-century, and the most original voice to emerge from the 1930s.” (May 2016). Born in Hull, England in 1902, Stevie Smith lived and produced all her writing from her unmarried aunt’s home in the suburbs of London. She lived there with her sister after her mother’s death and her father’s departure to the Navy. Smith called her aunt “The Lion” and immortalized her and their shared home, where Smith would die in 1971.
