Discuss the differences between family as a client and family as a system. What are the traditional family functions performed over history that still exist today? Why do some family functions still hold meaning even in modern times? Review the following article http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/26/health/families.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 and recall how changes in family landscapes have affected your practice.

Use at least one scholarly source other than your textbook to connect your response to national guidelines and evidence-based research in support of your ideas. This is required. In addition, you may also provide an example case, either from personal experience or from the media, which illustrates and supports your ideas.  All sources must be referenced and cited using correct APA (including a link to the source).

PROMPT1

Currently, families are a system that are connected to each other whether by the matriarchal or patriarchal connection.  According to the family systems theory, states that “each member plays a specific role and must follow certain rules.” (Broderick, 1993, p. 3)

The Family Systems Theory was introduced by Dr. Murray Bowen suggesting that” individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as a part of their family, as the family is an emotional unit. Families are systems of interconnected and interdependent individuals, none of whom can be understood in isolation from the system.”   (Broderick, 1993, Chapter 1)  The Family as a client it focuses on individual members of the family and at the same time the family as a unit. The challenge and goal for nursing is to involve the patient and the family as a unit to reach and obtain the goals.

In my experience it becomes clear that when the family is working as a unit , the patient’s health improves by following their dietary instructions, complying with the medication regimen, preventing infections, preventing falls and injuries, preventing hospitalizations and ultimately death.  On the other hand when there is no family system, the patient deteriorates rapidly, his blood pressure, blood sugar levels become uncontrolled, patients become dehydrated, confused, increased hospitalizations due to the lack of care, supervision, and mostly they are all alone, they feel depressed and isolated.

Traditionally the family functions were that the adult male of the family was the breadwinner, and the woman stayed home doing house chores such as cleaning, cooking, gardening, etc.  The woman was to stay home and take care of the house.  The modern family now is not just a man and woman, but all encompassing.  It could be two men or two women, multi-racial, different religions, different age groups living under one roof.  Both the traditional and modern families still perform at some holiday rituals.  According to an article in Innovation in Aging, researches Patricia Thomas PhD., Hui Liu PhD., and Debra Umberson PhD., some family functions still hold meaning even in modern times because, “Family relationships provide resources that can help an individual cope with stress, engage in healthier behaviors, and enhance self-esteem, leading to higher well-being.”(Thomas et al., 2017, p. 7)

My nursing practice has been affected especially taking care of the elderly when no other family member is available at home to teach, patients are usually alone with temporary help 2-3 hours to do cooking and light housekeeping, then they go home, the patient is left alone, patient forgets about the instructions that were given such as the importance of the medications compliance.
