As the focus for this module is on interracial coalition/conflict, this is a related extra credit assignment that specifically examines issues of intermarriage and dating in Asian American communities.

Over the last few years, there have been commentary and articles published on the release of data that digs into the racial and ethnic choices made by users of certain dating apps. This has provided an interesting look at how certain trends persist among people who use such apps, and there has also been significant scholarship on the issue of intermarriage and interracial relationships as well.

The readings for this assignment include:

  1. Rachel L. Swarns, “For Asian American Couples, A Tie That Binds” (Links to an external site.)
  2. Eric Francisco, “How Tinder Accidentally Exposed Society’s Inherent Racism” (Links to an external site.)
  3. Zhenchao Qian and Daniel T. Lichter, “Changing Patterns of Interracial Marriage in a Multiracial Society” (See file linked in the module)

To complete this assignment, read through all three articles, with specific attention to the academic research by Qian and Lichter published in the Journal of Marriage and Family. In a 400-500 word response, write about how Qian and Lichter’s findings might provide insight into patterns in Tinder app dating, or if not, in what ways that Tinder app data could be further extrapolated to a comparable research scope.
