Provide an analysis of the short story “The Story of X” by Lois Gould. This is not a summary; make sure that you offer an interpretation of the short story and that you “read between the lines” in order to address each aspect of analysis:
- Audience
- Purpose
- Content
- Mood
- Style
- Structure
In addition to your main response, you must also post substantive responses to at least two of your classmates’ posts in this thread. The story of X was very powerful and gives the readers a taste of the sexist world we live in. This short story really addresses that gender does not identify an individual. Gender should not distinguish what toy or sports children should grow up playing. This stereotype attitude that children grow up with is almost like setting them up for failure. In this story, X shows the “other children” that it is okay to play basketball or weave baskets whether you are a girl or boy. X really inspired and influenced others because it was not about playing with gender appropriate toys or hobbies, it was about “having twice as much fun…”. This short story will be great for closed-minded parents to read and share with their children because a lot of parents are raising their children gender-neutral.
