In his short chapter, “The Value of Philosophy” (taken from his book, The Problems of Philosophy), Bertrand Russell sets forth several ideas related to what Philosophy is and the value that it holds for both individuals and society as a whole. In articulating his point, Russell describes the “practical man,” the goals of Philosophy, the central value of philosophical inquiry, and, lastly, the role of philosophy in living and acting well.

In 1-2 paragraphs, begin a discussion thread that responds to the question, “what is the value of Philosophy?” In other words, how does Russell suggest that Philosophy can help us rationally and constructively question our beliefs and assumptions about ourselves, society, and the world in which we live?
After posting your own thread, you must respond to two additional posts in an engaged and respectful manner. Also, if a classmate or your instructor raises a question on your post, please make your best effort to respond. Be sure to offer a substantive response that goes beyond a simple, “Nice thought, I agree,” or something similar to that. Please see the Discussion Board Rubric for further clarification regarding the expectations of the Discussion Boards.
