One of the most important aspects of safety is ensuring our equipment is properly prepared and we are familiar with them. You have been designated as the safety officer for your station and have been asked by various commanders to develop checklists that identify essential components and procedures for the health and safety of emergency service personnel. Choose one piece of equipment (e.g., ladder, helmet, SCBA, etc.) and develop a 2-page checklist for the preparation for use of this piece of equipment. This checklist should incorporate all aspects of the piece of equipment that ensure its readiness for not only training but also response.
In addition, the 2-page checklist will include information for placing the piece of equipment back in service following an incident. This checklist should detail cleaning and inspection procedures, criteria for placing the unit out of service, and safety criteria that personnel should be aware of.
Once the checklist is completed, you will write a 1–2-page memo that you will submit to the various commanders reporting on the checklist you have developed and include the following information:
The purpose and importance of the equipment checklist.
The variations from this checklist from a similar equipment check before training, before emergency response, and after use.
The important differences personnel should be aware of regarding the checklists.
The role that you as the individual performs when inspecting the piece of equipment.
How concerns should be addressed including taking the piece of equipment out of service and criteria for doing so.
Address any additional comments or criteria to be considered when the equipment inspections are to be completed.
Discuss the safety implications associated with both checklists and why personnel should utilize them for their safety as well as the safety of the members of their department.
In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the assignment, a successful paper must also meet the following criteria:
Include a cover page and references page in 10- to 12-point font (Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable).
Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained.
Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).
Writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful.
Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics.
Appropriate citation style should be followed.
You should also make sure to:
Include a title page with full name, class name, section number, and date.
Include an introductory and concluding paragraph and demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English.
Use examples to support your discussion.
