ESSAY ASSIGNMENT: The central question is: How did Grimké use the Bible and Christian tradition as well as American patriotic and domestic ideals to make her case that the United States must end the practice of slavery? As you prepare your response, consider in your analysis the following elements. Upon which does Grimké rely upon: religion or patriotic ideals? To what extent does Stowe’s character of Mrs. Bird in Uncle Tom’s Cabin suggest that American women may have heeded Grimké’s advice? To what extent does Grimké embody the idea that the Cult of Domesticity empowered women? Use and cite evidence from the documents to support your analysis of Grimké’s “Appeal to Southern Women” and the excerpt from chapter nine of Stowe’s book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. References to ALL of the excerpts must be incorporated into your essay. Do not use outside sources.
The broad question asks students to analyze specific texts of antebellum America and evaluate how they made the case for abolition and how they reveal the role of women within American culture. This is a way that students:
- develop a historical context for understanding current issues and events
- think critically about institutions, cultures, and behaviors in their local and/or national environment
- understand the social, political, and economic development of the United States
