This is a term research paper, meaning the student is expected to research the selected topic. Sources include the text (and its references), books, published papers, lecture notes, professional societies or organizations (e.g., DAMA, IAIDQ)), etc. The term paper should be submitted in a Word document and consist of approximately 20-30 pages. The text should contain line-and-half spacing, written in Time New Roman size 12 font. The paper should be formalized in that it will consist of labeled sections, such as an Introduction, References, etc.; in fact, there should be clearly defined section headings throughout the paper.
In general, the paper should have two broad areas: the first is an analysis and discussion of the ideas and concepts concerning your topic (i.e., its content), including your research. The second section should be an application of the ideas and concepts (from the first section) to your school, company (or major division), or from information on companies from the Internet. The second part of the paper may also contain references, but these would tend to be industry or organization specific.
The topic is at the discretion of the student. I have listed several topics below, but you may select another data-related topic. At the end of the section Getting Started is posted two sample final papers: one on data quality and another of big data. Also, your topic may be a refinement of the listed topic; for example, instead of Big Data, you may write on Big Data Security, Big Data Analysis, Big Data Governance, Big Data Storage, etc.The topic should address the broad themes of the course, including, but not limited to, the following:
1. The role of data modeling in systems and organizational analysis
2. An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling approaches we have presented in class. Include the situations (e.g., types of applications or business situations) where each approach would be best suited.
3. Behavior specification, such as contracts and/or formal methods with “Z” or “VDM” as an example. Alternatively, you can write exclusively on formal methods or on “Z” or VDM.

6. Business intelligence and data analytics

8. Cloud computing
9. Strategic data management and planning, embracing the idea of “data as a strategic asset”
