The profession of nursing has evolved over the years. Gone are the days that our main role was to execute the order as written by physicians. We note only follow the orders written by physicians, but we also help coordinate patient care, educate our patients about their disease process and how to improve their quality of life, provide emotional support to both the patient and their families, and advocate that our patient’s wishes are followed. As health care leaders, we strive to foster patient care environments where our staff feel empowered to advocate for their patients. Cribb, A. (2013). Chapter 2: The ethical dimension: Nursing practice, nursing philosophy, and nursing ethics., states that “nursing philosophy has shifted from sick nursing to health nursing” (p.23).
Using an example from your current clinical setting, answer at least one or more of the following questions:
1. What does this statement mean to you and your nursing practice?
2. What personal values, personal experiences, etc. have influenced the way you advocate your patients?
3. What ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations do you face or expect to face in practice? Be sure not to post any identifying information.
Due Monday
