1. Emigration, good or bad – and from whose point of view? Discuss with respect to
the experience of one sending or receiving country (or one or more groups within
these countries) during the period of mass migration, 1870-1914.

2. It is often argued that the pre-WWI gold standard facilitated international trade and
foreign investment. Did it? If so, how; if not, why not?

3. Did the expansion of international trade 1870-1914 foster convergence in the
Atlantic community? Explain why it did or did not and support your argument
with qualitative and/or qualitative evidence.

The essay should be no longer than 6 double-spaced pages (roughly 1800 words). The
general idea is to choose a topic and define it sufficiently well that you can treat it
seriously within the prescribed space. Suggested topics are broad and thus require
considerable narrowing and refinement. Readings included in the course syllabus will
provide you with a sufficient set of references for your essay but feel free to add
material as you see fit.

For this assignment, you will review one of the articles below and type a 3 to 5-page paper (excluding a
work cited page). Your paper must follow APA formatting, be double spaced, have a 12-point font, and
be saved as PDF.

Structure of Paper: A critical review paper has two goals: 1) to identify and summarize the argument the
author is making and 2) to provide your analysis and critique of that argument. Your paper will have the
following sections:
 Introduction
o Identify the authors and the title of the article
o Present the central argument or goal of the paper (do not go into much detail) o Your
introduction should be 1-2 paragraphs
 Summary
o Describe any past relevant research mentioned in the article
o Describe how the study was done: how the evaluation was set up, how the data was
collected, how the outcomes were measured, etc.
o Summarize all relevant findings in an unbiased way (remember this isn’t your analysis)
o Describe the author’s views in an unbiased way
Analysis
o Critique the research, methodology, findings, etc. (this
includes the pros and cons, costs, and benefits)
o Provide any other sources and arguments you might find helpful (cite your sources)
o To help with your analysis, consider these questions:
 Were the conclusions of the evaluation justified by the evidence presented? What
other data would you like to see, if any?
 Can the results be applied in policy form? Explain.
 What other evaluations would you prefer the authors to do? How would this be
helpful?
o When analyzing the research, make sure that any opinion is substantiated with thoughtful
reason. For example, don’t say “I believe x would be better” without providing any
rationale.

Using the materials on the lumber, champagne, vanilla, bacon or cereal industry found in the Week 2 Readings (attached), complete an analysis of the lumber, champagne, vanilla, bacon or cereal industry. Make sure your analysis utilizes graphs. Consider the elasticity of demand and supply and use the articles to identify supply and demand shifters. Can you use your graphs to correctly illustrate what is happening in the industry today? Is government intervening in the market in any way?
