exam essay responses to questions
There are five essay questions to be answered for this essay exam. Each essay question is worth 20
points.
• Answer all five essay questions in one document. With each include the following
information: whether it is Essay 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 and whether it is answer A or B.
• You do not need a cover sheet or to follow strict rules of paper writing, i.e. thesis, introduction,
etc. You are answering essay questions not constructing a research paper.
• BUT Answer in complete and grammatically correct sentences when constructing your essay
answers and the use of signal phrases will enhance your credibility and indicate where the
information originated. (i.e., In Gone to Texas, Randolph Campbell argues, In the lecture videos
we explored…etc.)
• The length of each answer is dependent upon the question you choose to write on. Be specific
with your answers and provide specific examples. These are not short answer essays – one
paragraph answers will not suffice. You must answer the questions and provide evidence.
• Use 12-point Times New Roman font and use single space for your essay answers. Double or
triple space between each essay answer.
• Save your essays answers as a PDF file and then submit the exam through the D2L drop box by
the due date.
• Draw your answers from the instructional and informational videos in the course, your precis
article (if applicable), and your Gone to Texas Randolph Campbell textbook.
• Do not use quotes in your exam. Put everything in your own words. Do not use outside sources
beyond the ones listed above. Failure to follow these rules and using other people’s work as you
own, copying and pasting from a fellow student, the internet will be considered
plagiarism. Students who plagiarize will receive a zero for the exam.
• Essay exam is due on Monday, 3 October 2022 by 10:00 p.m. (CST). Papers submitted after
10PM (CST) on the 3rd will receive a half -letter grade deduction. For each day the paper is late
after the 3rd , a full letter grade will be deducted.

Answer one of the two questions below following the directions listed above. Use examples from the
lectures/videos/textbook to strengthen your answer. Construct a coherent answer and be specific!
A. Texas Natives Lecture: Compare and contrast three Native groups (Caddo, Karankawas,
Coahuiltecans, Apache, Comanche or Jumanos). Examine the influence of Geography, Settlement
styles, food availability impacted their culture. Finally, how did these groups influence European
settlement of Texas?
B. Texas under France/Spain Lecture: Examine Spain and France’s early explorations of Texas.
Discuss where they went, who they encountered and why in the early days they did not have great
success or desire in establishing long term settlements.

Essay Two of Five (20 points):
Answer one of the two questions below following the directions listed above. Use examples from the
lectures/videos/textbook to strengthen your answer. Construct a coherent answer and be specific!
A. Texas under France/Spain Lecture: Spain and France established many settlements in Texas,
but only a few were considered successful. Examine the factors that resulted in Spanish and
French settlements failure. Remember to include a discussion of geography, the location of the
settlements, the Native groups adjacent to and residing in settlements, the missions’ goals, and
ultimately why the San Antonio region and East Texas were the most successful areas of
settlements for the Spanish and French (east).
B. Texas under France/Spain Lecture: Explore the accomplishments of three centuries of Spanish
rule. What lasting influence has Spain had on Texas’ politically, economically, and socially and
how has their legacy created differences between East Coast British settlements and West Coast
Spanish settlements? Be specific and exhaustive.
Essay Three of Five (20 points):
Answer one of the two questions below following the directions listed above. Use examples from the
lectures/videos/textbook to strengthen your answer. Construct a coherent answer and be specific!
A. Texas under Mexico Lecture: The Constitution of 1824 was very important for the transition of
Mexico from a colony of Spain to an independent stable country. Explain the focus on the
Constitution of 1824 and what role this constitution will have on state rebellions including the
Texas Revolution.
B. Texas under Mexico Lecture: Explore the events that caused Mexico to sign the Law of 6 April
1830. Remember to examine the law itself and what impact this will have on the Texians and the
Tejanos communities in Texas. Determine whether the law will negatively or positively impact
Texas and explain why – give specific examples.
Essay Four of Five (20 points):
Answer one of the two questions below following the directions listed above. Use examples from the
lectures/videos/textbook to strengthen your answer. Construct a coherent answer and be specific!
A. Texas Revolution Lecture: Review the events and decisions made by the Texians and the
Mexican government between 1830 – 1835. Select the events based on your readings that you
believe to be the most significant and the least significant in leading to the Texas Revolution.
Once you make your selection, provide an exhaustive argument for the ones you chose to be the
most and least significant using the textbook, notes and videos associated with the course.
B. Texas Revolution Lecture: The Battle of Gonzales in 1835 and the conflict at Zacatecas were
important for several reasons. Explore first both conflicts, what happened and who emerged
successful in each campaign. Then examine what impact the conflicts will have on the current
Texians, Tejanos, as well as U.S. residents. Explain how these conflicts change the nature of the

fight for the Texians, Tejanos, and the incoming U.S. residents and how will this impact the
relationship with Mexico and President Santa Anna.

A. REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Lecture: Compare and contrast the presidential terms of Sam Houston
and Mirabeau B. Lamar. What were the major issues each president faced and how successful
were they as president? What was their relationship like with each other and how did that spill
over into Texas politics?
B. REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Lecture: Juan Seguin wrote in 1858 that he was a “foreigner in my
own country.” Explain what he meant by this and explore race relations between the Tejano
Community and the Republic of Texas (1836-1845). How did it change or did it after the Texas
Revolution?
