A full twenty percent (20%) of your grade will come from a four to six page essay that you shall write to the following specifications:

This essay should be on “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gillman. The essay should be on themes that are found in Gillman’s works.

You should explain how a particular theme is treated or developed in Gillman’s works.

You should write an essay of at least four to six full double-spaced pages with a clear thesis statement. The thesis is the first sentence of the essay I will read. This thesis should, without announcing, lay out a clear blueprint for the discussion to come. It should be the last sentence of your introduction. Individual paragraph topic sentences should be simple, clear, and directly support the thesis statement. Your essay must have a Works Cited page in proper MLA format. The Works Cited page does not count toward the length of the essay. The essay should be professional, double-spaced, and in Times New Roman 12pt font. You should make use of four to six outside sources for this essay, not including your text. Consult Purdue Owl.edu for more information on properly citing sources and creating works cited pages. You must incorporate textual evidence (quotes/details, cited in MLA format) from the outside sources to support the claim(s) you are making in this essay, as well. Every body paragraph should contain at least one MLA quote. Write original material. Do not just fill up the paragraph with quotes; make your quotes short. Quotes should usually be only one sentence long. Do not excessively quote from the story. In this essay you are only allowed to quote the story twice, and the quotes should be limited to one sentence; the rest of your quotes should be from literary criticisms.

In this short writing of only 1-2 two-pages double spaced, I want you to first read Washington
Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Then, I want you to respond to either story related to the prompt I am about to provide you. Thus,
you only have to write about “Rip Van Winkle” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
I am looking at least for a full page in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced. Include
an MLA header in the top left corner (name, professor’s name, class name, date) and page numbers or an
MLA header (last name and page numbers). Also, make sure to include a creative title (not just the

In Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” he addresses
darker and supernatural themes. Many readers often view these short stories as horror because they
conform to many aspects of the genre; however, it is more accurate to describe these stories as “gothic.”
Rather than gothic stories necessarily being scary, they are more accurately described as unnerving and
supernatural. But gothic stories often also have a sense of comedy to them. In this short essay, I want you
to tell me where you see the presence of both gothic and comedic themes the most in the story. At one
point in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Irving describes the town: “A drowsy, dreamy influence seems
to hang over the land, and pervade the very atmosphere” (42). So, where do you see in “Rip Van
Wrinkle” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” a “drowsy, dreamy influence” that creates a gothic yet
comedic atmosphere? I want you to quote at least once from either short story to influence your
analysis.
 IMPORTANT NOTE: Avoid the use of first-person pronouns—pronouns like “I,” “we,”
“my”— in this short writing.

Aristotle captured some of these concepts in his works on the structure of plays in the Poetica. His legacy is still the foundation of literature that students learn in the ninth grade about stories: plot, character; theme, and beyond.
Think about how identity, including attributes such as gender, race, class and culture might play a role in a story’s plot, character development, and theme.
Then, make up a short story using one or more identity elements as a key part of the plot, character, and theme. You can base your story on one that is well-known if you like. And offer a paragraph or two about how the concepts of Aristotle contribute to your being able to create your story.

For your essay, you are going to choose THREE of the following quotations to work with, one for every body paragraph. Take the entire quotation; don’t just pull a piece of it. Your job is to think about two things. First of all, you need to consider what literary techniques Jones is using. You should look at word choice, symbolism, metaphors and similes, etc. Secondly, you need to think about the theme that Jones is creating with the quotations that you have decided to use. Ultimately, your thesis statement is going to be something along the lines of: Jones uses Literary Device 1, Literary Device 2, and Literary Device 3 to show THEME.

Make sure that each body paragraph not only focuses on a specific quotation and literary technique, but also a different piece of the theme. Don’t prove the entire theme in all three body paragraphs. Build something over the course of your paper. Be sure to have a three part theme!

Body Paragraph formatting – 3 total
-Introductory sentence (statement you are going to be proving through the paragraph)- Since your theme is going to be made up of three parts, this is going to be proving ⅓ of your theme
-Context – 1 to 2 sentence- the reader read the book, just remind him what happens around the quote you are using
Quote: Pick one for each paragraph from below
Requote and embed – take one word or a short phrase out of the big quote and use it to show how the author uses the literary device to prove your introductory sentence, and ultimately the theme- start analyzing in the same sentence that you embed the phrase- continue in following sentences
Concluding sentence- sum up all the points kind of a zoom out of what you have depicted (the paragraph after the quote is narrow and gets more general as we reach the concluding sentence)
