A major component of this class is a minimum 2250-word (excluding the separate cover, abstract, and
reference pages), APA-style research paper. It represents a substantial effort on your part to research
and write an in-depth paper. No more than 25% of the written assignment in this course may be attributed
to referenced sources. Your paper must be 75% original thought. Again, your cited work and quotations
must not exceed 25%. You must use and cite a minimum of five primary sources (with no more than two
being Internet sources) in the text and References page. Dictionaries and encyclopedias are not
appropriate or considered adequate as referenced sources. Turnitin originality reports provide the
instructor with the word count in addition to the percentage of wording attributable to other sources. Do
not cut and paste from other sources. Your failure to cite sources by using in-text citations and failure to
use APA quotation formatting where necessary will result in referrals as potential Academic Code Violations.
Whole or partial papers may not be submitted from previous courses or classes to fulfill this
course requirement and will be referred as a potential Academic Code Violation.
You must select a research topic from the following list and use your research to relate the topic to
exploiting specifically identified weaknesses in transnational terrorist organizations while demonstrating
an understanding of the Saint Leo University core value of responsible stewardship as it relates to
addressing exploitable weaknesses in terrorist organizations:

It is very important that the presentation is based on credible research.
By credible research, I mean actual research data in the form of statistics as recorded in scholarly research studies. You can access such research studies via Google Scholar as well as the databases listed on the Brooklyn College library homepage. If you are in doubt about whether the material you have collected is appropriate for the presentation, just ask me via email. It is also important that the presentation is value-neutral. You are not arguing a point; you are simply informing the audience about what is known about your topic.

You can choose any subject of general public interest; the most important thing, again, is that the entire presentation is based on credible research, which is nicely summarized and discussed during the presentation.

The presentation should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. It also should include a bibliography of all the material on which it is based. Here is what you need to do in each part of the presentation:

The Beginning
Introduce the topic of your presentation by explaining its importance and discuss how the rest of your presentation is organized. The presentation should have a logical flow, which is clearly explained and justified.

The Middle
In the main part of the presentation, you provide a comprehensive and nuanced review of what research has discovered about your chosen topic, nicely organized into sub-topics, which you clearly introduce to the listener. It is important that your properly integrate and synthesize the research data that you discuss instead of simply discussing one individual study after the other. The presentation should have a coherent story line and be organized into main points and sub-points. Do not mention the names of researchers, their affiliations, or make any methodological comments. Just focus on the research data.

The End
You should end the presentation by briefly summarizing your main points and discuss any gaps in the research that future research should address.

The Bibliography
Please include an alphabetized list of all the material on which your presentation is based.

Instructions This assignment is an annotated bibliography that you will prepare in service to the research essay due later

Instructions
This assignment is an annotated bibliography that you will prepare in service to the research essay due later this term. To complete this assignment, you will first need to look at the research essay guidelines and consider the specific focus of your research essay.

What is an annotated bibliography? You are likely familiar with bibliographies, which are lists of articles, books, and other materials referenced in a piece of academic writing. Bibliographies are formatted according to a specific style guide, which is often specific to a discipline, and included as an appendix. An annotated bibliography is also a list of such works, formatted according to a style guide, but it includes a brief descriiption or explanatory note about each item.

Why do we use annotated bibliographies? They are useful ways to keep track of your research and determine which sources will be useful to a given project. They are especially useful at the brainstorming stage of an assignment when you are starting to formulate a thesis. Done properly, annotated bibliographies reveal themes, common arguments, and areas of disagreement on a given topic. They may also stop you from pursuing a given project by showing that insufficient secondary literature is available to draw on.

Your annotated bibliography must be properly formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition in the author/date style, meaning you will use in-text citations rather than end notes. (Political Science does not have a disciplinary style guide, but this is one commonly used in leading politics journals.) You must provide a complete and properly formatted citation for each source. While you are welcome to use citation software to format your citations you are responsible to check the citations it generates for you.

Your annotated bibliography must include 5 scholarly sources (e.g. peer-reviewed). Below each citation, you must provide a 200-250 word summary. Each summary must succinctly explain the relevant themes and arguments from the piece. When deciding what information to include, think about how the chosen source will help you answer your research question. Your annotated bibliography must also include a draft of your research essay question.

Length: 1000-1300 words (the citations themselves are not included in the word count)
Citations: Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (author/date style)
Layout: Double-spaced
Font: Times New Roman, 12pt.
