Green Infrastructure/Low Impact Development (LID)
Purpose:
To learn about innovative stormwater management solutions most commonly referred to
as Low Impact Development (LID)/Green Infrastructure. Onsite stormwater
management is an important part of site development and subdivision design.
Overview: Climate change is altering weather patterns and therefore resulting in more
severe and frequent storms, which overwhelm stormwater management systems. Cities
are requiring to adapt to climate change through green infrastructure techniques.
Task:
Students will prepare a (3) to (4) page report (excluding title page, appendix
and works cited) that answers the following questions:
1) What is low impact development/green infrastructure?
2) What are the advantages of LID techniques over conventional grey
infrastructure techniques?
3) Identify and thoroughly discuss three (3) types of low impact development
techniques that maybe used in a plan of subdivision, building design or on an
individual site design.
4) Undertake a site visit in your community or nearby community to find and identify
a green infrastructure example that corresponds to one of the examples
discussed above. Provide pictures of the example as appendix (attachment).
Assessment:
The assignment constitutes 15% of your final mark. Students will be assessed on the
following criteria (for weights of each item please review the rubric on the assignment
page on MyCanvas).
Writing Style (flow of report)
Use of headings/subheading to organize content
Spelling/grammar/sentence structure
Ability to follow assignment instructions
Accuracy of information, depth of discussion on the topic and example chosen.
References (please ensure to use APA referencing style)
Font style (sanserif such as Arial/Calibri) font size 11 – 12 pt
