In your analysis, you should identify and describe the rhetorical situation( author, audience, text, genre, purpose, and exigence). Pay attention to:

First, in this introductory paragraph, accommodate two of the most important ways you believe your opponents will use to advance their position. In other words, concede the compelling ways you know those arguing for the other side will give to defend their position. This would seem as if you were arguing against your position, but you are not. Essentially, you are simply establishing your understanding of the opponents’ point of view. Admitting that your opponents have valid reasons for their position does not weaken your argument. On the contrary, it strengthens it. Besides, if you do not admit to the presence of obvious sound reasons of your opponents, they will point them out to you, and that will weaken your case. Second, in this paragraph, the sentence that immediately follows your accommodation should be your position or thesis, and you MUST UNDERLINE IT. Your thesis or position must begin with an appropriate transition, such as “even though,” “however,” or “in spite of.” Finally, state at least three sound reasons that directly support your thesis in three separate sentences linked by transitions.
In each of your body paragraphs, paragraphs two, three, and four state one of your reasons explain it thoroughly and relate it to your position. Then directly cite a relevant source (evidence) to support the reason. In the next sentence(s), show how your quotation supports your reason. Thereafter, anticipate an objection to your stated reason and evidence. Now refute (Refutation) the objection. This means that you must have three sound reasons with a direct citation to support each reason.
Paragraph five, Conclusion. As for your conclusion, it is not enough to just summarize a conclusion. Among other things, your conclusion must call your audience/readers to action. In the case of particularly an argument of the sort you are pursuing in your essay, you need to tell the readers specifically what they must do to be sure. In other words, tell the readers which appropriate actions they must take to achieve the goal you want.

For this study, the research question is: • Are the rising occupational injuries in undocumented workers an impact of the current Workers’ Compensation System laws in states that have a high increase in migrant workers, such as Texas and Florida? Instructions: Perform a literature review on the attached peer-review article and reference how the findings may relate to a increase in occupational injury in Latino/undocumented workers.

Create a Fair Day in your Youth or Community Program. A Fair Day is a day in which you and the members of your youth or community program will host people from your local area to come and learn about the many different aspects of the topic you chose. Your fair will be a fun way for your program to raise money and interact with the people in your area. It will also be a chance for your students to learn more about the topic you chose and become “experts” as they teach those who come to your fair more about that topic and what it means for those most affected by it.

The assignment itself: You may write your paper on one of the following three topics:

1. An in-depth analysis of United States v. Jones, 565 U.S. ___ (2012) and the Fourth Amendment case law leading up to Jones. Specifically, what cases did Jones overturn, either entirely or in part? How did Jones affect the applicability of the Fourth Amendment?

2. Research the case law and statutory law behind self-defense and the use of deadly force. What does the case law reveal that an average citizen can use in terms of self-defense and deadly force? How is that different than what a law enforcement officer can do? Provide a detailed analysis of the case law in which the courts have grappled with these issues. Focus primarily on the Supreme Court cases on this issue.

3. Research, summarize, and analyze the most recent US Supreme Court opinions that address criminal law matters, such as ineffective assistance counsel, probable cause and Fourth Amendment challenges. Of these recent Supreme Court cases, which cases were overturned? How has the case law evolution led up to this point and how might it be affected in the foreseeable future? What are the practical implications of these recent Supreme Court decisions?

4. Finally, if you are very interested in researching another criminal law topic, please send me a message by the end of Week 3 to seek approval for your topic. Otherwise, please choose from among the three above topics.

No matter your selected topic:

explain whether your selected topic is (or should be) a public policy-related matter, and why.
use effective, well-designed search strategies and tools to efficiently and creatively refine searches, on the fly as needed
apply multiple criteria to assess relevance, currency, authority, accuracy, purpose, audience and ideological perspectives related to your topic.

Your paper should be 8-10 pages. Here are some general guidelines. Please use a clear (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, Courier) 12 point font and one inch margins on all four sides. Please include page numbers. Please double space. I recommend using topic and sub topic headings to organize your paper.

Please apply Bluebook citation style (which uses footnotes) if you are a Legal Studies student. If you are not a Legal Studies student, you may use APA style, which uses end notes in a reference page at the end of your research paper.

It is fine for the total paper to be at 10 pages, including the title page, abstract and references. That being said, if the paper is 10 pages in length and then another few more pages with those items, that is fine too. What I’m really looking for in the paper is graduate level cohesive writing in which you research and analyze primary legal sources, such as case law, statutes and the US Constitution.

Write an introduction, which clearly identifies the topic of your report and the issues which you seek to illuminate. The introduction should include the thesis statement (or basis of your report), and a very preliminary overview of the evidence you will use to support it. Finally, the introduction should include a statement that identifies why is the topic of your report important.

2. The body of your report should be dedicated to supporting your thesis statement with claims gleaned from your research (into what others have written on the topic; data that you have gathered), readings from the course text, discussions, and/or case law, law review articles, etc.

3. Conclude your report by recapitulating your thesis statement and explaining in greater detail the significance of your findings. Include in your conclusion some questions or claims about the topic and/or specific which you’ve written. If you believe more research needs to be done on your topic, be specific about what kind of research and how you think it ought to be done.

Your paper is due at the end of the 6th week of the course. Week 6 will be here before you know it. I will take points off for late submissions so please turn your paper in by midnight on Sunday of Week 6. I will also do my best to grade the paper asap as they come in, so if you want to turn your paper in early, I’ll do my best to grade it quickly.

I recommend that you proofread your paper several times to ensure that you have no spelling, grammar or punctuation errors and that your paper flows well and is organized.

This week, we are going to use the discussion forum as a chance to practice for the annotated bibliography assignment. The exercise you do here is VERY CLOSELY related to what you will be expected to do for the annotated bibliography that is due October 21st.

DIRECTIONS:
Each one of you should have chose to either watch “The Pill” documentary, read Shannon et al, or read the Scientific American/Slate articles in addition to reading the article by Emily Martin. I want you all to now search for 2 external sources that speak to the issues described in your chosen piece, and tell us how that source adds to the discussion of these issues. One of these sources HAS to be a research article. The other can be whatever you want it to be, but treat sources with care.

Once you have selected your sources, please complete the following steps:

1. Cite the source using a professional format of your choosing (e.g. Chicago, APA, MLA, etc). There are tons of resources out there for learning about citation if you are not already familiar. 2. Provide a summary of the source. First, label the type of source this is (e.g. research article, perspective piece, news article, video media, podcast, etc). This should include 2 sentences on the background and main narrative of the source, and 2 sentences on the main points/arguments made by the source.

3. Tell us how this source contributes to the discussion of gender and science. There are two parts to this. First, tell use how your source contributes to discussions on gender and science in your chosen instructional material. Then, show us how it contributes by connecting the ideas, main points, arguments, and/or narratives of your sources to the instructional material you chose to engage with (2-3 sentences).
Some examples of what you could ask yourself when considering what a contribution looks like: Does your source add new evidence for us to consider? Does your source agree/disagree directly with what was argued in your chosen material? Does yourself provide a new perspective/idea we should consider? Does your source ask some new questions that are important for use to consider? (Hint: these are not mutually exclusive questions)
